I'm feeling Nest-y.

Posted by Janine Morris on Sunday, November 20, 2011, In : current projects

I'm in a Nest-y kind of mood at the moment. You can see it in my latest work.

Repurposed vintage spoons with black velvet ribbon and mini nest with moss, available at Nest, Penguin..

I'm feeling inspired by our feathered friends. I watch them in the garden, gathering materials, building nests, all the while talking and talking and talking. I wonder who is in charge, who gets to make the final say, on the best looking nest. I watch the birdies hanging on to the overhead wires, almost vertical ...

Sewing toys and kits in Winter.

Posted by Janine Morris on Sunday, July 3, 2011, In : toys
Winter is the stock making time. A lovely time to slow down and find those inside jobs. Long walks on the beach breaks up this work - in between showers, sleet and snow!  Back at work, I have been laying out and making kits and toys.

Both are made from 100% woollen blankets I have collected over time. I wash them in hot water and lots of soap ( my kids call them soap monster washes). This felts (or fulls)  the blankets -  ready to be cut into toys and kits.

My focus on materials is to re-use...

Winter wollies

Posted by Janine Morris on Saturday, June 25, 2011, In : upcycled
I recently made a new product for my growing range of clothes. Here is the child's Cape I made. It is made from a repurposed 100% woollen blanket, felted and cut into a cape, and lined with red linen.

It has a hand sewn snowflake detail, with baby doileys and buttons. It is reversible, the red linen side has baby doileys and vintage and collected buttons.

This cape has been sold, thanks to the lovely lady who bought it! I have a few more capes in progress and will be selling them through Nest,...

10,000 Minutes of Plastic - My new Project

Posted by Janine Morris on Sunday, April 3, 2011, In : current projects

10,000 minutes of plastic.

A project by Janine Morris of second Sister.

365 days of collecting plastic for 1/2 hour each day. This equals over 10,000 minutes of collecting time.

This project is about the plastic I collect in one year, and represents plastic for a week of our life. A small snapshot of our reliance on plastic, our consumerism, lack of respect for ourselves and all that we share our planet with.

This project is about the reliance we have on plastic in our everyday life.

baskets under construction

Posted by Janine Morris on Saturday, March 12, 2011, In : baskets
Making string with recycled sari silk and sisal string.

Framed joined with a god's eye. Weaving in string with basket upside down, between knees.

Keep turning it around the right way, to see that the colours look right, and that the frame still has the shape you started with. Some of us find that string is woven on more than just baskets (see my wrist).

A lovely basket of collected blue bailing twine, just perfect for these rope baskets.

Another beach rope basket,

That has gone to its new own...
